COMELEC Warns Against Election Misinformation Claiming Date Change

Manila, Philippines — May 10, 2025

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has issued a strong warning against misinformation spreading on social media that falsely claims the upcoming national elections have been moved to May 10 instead of May 12. Officials reaffirmed that the election date remains unchanged and urged voters to rely only on official sources for updates.

Disinformation Campaign Targeting Voters

COMELEC spokesperson Dir. Juan Santos addressed the issue in a press briefing earlier today, emphasizing that these misleading claims are part of an orchestrated effort to confuse voters and undermine electoral integrity.

“This is a deliberate attempt to spread disinformation and disrupt the democratic process. We urge voters to verify information directly from COMELEC and trusted government sources,” Santos stated.

Social Media Platforms Flooded with False Claims

The false election date has circulated on several social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok, with some users sharing posts that appear to impersonate official government pages. Some posts even included edited graphics mimicking COMELEC announcements, further fueling confusion among the public.

COMELEC has partnered with the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to identify and remove deceptive content while tracking the sources of misinformation.

Efforts to Combat Election Disinformation

To counter election-related falsehoods, COMELEC is ramping up its voter education campaign, encouraging citizens to fact-check viral claims, report misleading content, and refrain from sharing unverified information.

COMELEC also reminded voters that official election updates are available only on its website (www.comelec.gov.ph) and verified social media pages.

Additionally, digital platforms and government agencies are strengthening measures to detect and flag fake news, ensuring that misinformation does not interfere with voter turnout.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

With just two days remaining before the highly anticipated May 12 elections, COMELEC reassures the public that all preparations are in place to guarantee a secure, transparent, and orderly voting process.

“This election is critical for the country’s future. Every voter has the responsibility to stay informed and protect the integrity of our democracy,” Santos emphasized.

COMELEC urges voters to double-check information before sharing it and to report any election-related misinformation to authorities.
