Marcos Orders Probe into Controversial NAIA Barrier Deal

Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered an investigation into the procurement and installation of bollards at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 following a tragic accident that claimed two lives.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved a sport utility vehicle (SUV) crashing through the barriers and into a group of people, killing a five-year-old girl and a 28-year-old man. The bollards, designed to prevent such accidents, failed to stop the vehicle, raising concerns about their effectiveness and the installation process.

Government Response

Malacañang confirmed that the bollards were installed in 2019 during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that the investigation will focus on the procurement process and whether the barriers met safety standards.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has been tasked with leading the probe and ensuring the immediate replacement of the faulty bollards. Dizon noted that the barriers were not sturdy enough to withstand the crash’s impact, prompting a review of their specifications.

Public Safety Concerns

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) and New NAIA Infra Corp., the airport’s private consortium, have also investigated the incident. Experts warn that installing purely metal or metal-and-concrete bollards could pose additional risks, particularly in an earthquake or structural failure.

In response to the accident, authorities are considering new safety measures, including stricter parking regulations and enhanced security protocols at NAIA’s departure area.

Looking Ahead

The fatal crash has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of government infrastructure projects. As the investigation unfolds, officials must determine whether negligence or substandard materials contributed to the barriers’ failure.
