Egypt has unveiled a comprehensive plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its Palestinian residents. This initiative stands in stark contrast to President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal, which called for the depopulation of Gaza to facilitate U.S. control and redevelopment of the territory.
Egypt’s Reconstruction Proposal
According to Egypt’s state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, the Egyptian plan involves creating “secure areas” within Gaza where Palestinians can reside temporarily while construction firms work on rehabilitating the strip’s infrastructure. The proposal is designed to ensure that Palestinians remain in their homeland throughout the reconstruction process, which is set to occur in three phases over five years.
Central to Egypt’s plan is the establishment of a Palestinian administration that is not aligned with either Hamas or the Palestinian Authority. This new administration would oversee the reconstruction efforts, ensuring the process is managed effectively and without political bias.
International Support and Funding
Egyptian officials have been discussing reconstruction with European diplomats and representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates to garner support and secure funding. An international conference on Gaza reconstruction is also being considered to raise the necessary resources.
Trump’s Controversial Proposal
President Donald Trump’s proposal, which has faced widespread criticism, called for the removal of Gaza’s population of approximately 2 million Palestinians. Trump suggested that the United States would take over the Gaza Strip and transform it into a “Riviera of the Middle East,” with Palestinians being permanently relocated.
