The United Nations (UN) was established in the aftermath of World War II to maintain international peace and security. The UN Charter, signed on June 26, 1945, and coming into effect on October 24, 1945, set forth the organization’s objectives: to prevent future conflicts, promote human rights, and foster social and economic development.
The UN’s original purpose was to create a platform for dialogue and cooperation among nations, ensuring that disputes could be resolved peacefully and that the horrors of war would never be repeated. Over the years, the UN has expanded its role to include a wide range of activities, from peacekeeping missions to humanitarian aid and development projects.
Evolution into a Global Governance Agency As the world became more interconnected and the challenges more complex, the UN has evolved into what can be seen as a global governance agency. The organization’s structure now encompasses a multitude of specialized agencies, programs, and funds, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), among others. These bodies address a broad spectrum of global issues, from health and education to climate change and economic development.
The UN’s influence and operations have grown to include setting international standards and norms, facilitating global treaties and agreements, and providing platforms for international cooperation on critical issues. This evolution has positioned the UN as a central player in global governance, striving to coordinate and support member states’ efforts in addressing transnational challenges.
Challenges and Criticisms Despite its noble objectives, the UN has faced several criticisms and challenges over the years:

- Countries with Poor Human Rights Records are Heading Human Rights Committees. Countries with poor human rights records have occasionally been appointed to the UN Human Rights Council, raising concerns about its credibility and effectiveness. For example, countries like Venezuela, Libya, and Brazil have been criticized for their human rights practices but still hold positions on the Council.
- Infiltration of UN Agencies by Bad Actors. There have been reports of anti-rights groups infiltrating UN agencies. These groups use persuasive discourses to gain legitimacy and undermine human rights standards from within. This infiltration has led to a culture of harassment, abuse of power, and the spread of misinformation in some UN agencies.
- Misuse of Veto Power in the UN Security Council. The veto power of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) has been misused to protect their interests. This has often resulted in inaction on critical issues such as mass violence and genocide.

The UN Project 2030. In 2015, the UN launched Project 2030, also known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This ambitious plan outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation. The SDGs serve as a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all, with a focus on leaving no one behind.

The 2030 Agenda emphasizes the importance of partnerships and collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society to achieve these goals. The goals come under a liberal globalist viewpoint, advocating for shared responsibilities and cooperation among nations. It calls for countries with abundant resources to share with those lacking to ensure a more equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities. The Agenda highlights the need for urgent action to combat climate change, promote sustainable development, and ensure everyone has access to basic human rights and opportunities.
